Austin Film Festival Day 2 & 3

more aff, was out too late at a friend's karaoke birthday party. i got him a shake weight and a pink hannah montana pinata shaped, like a guitar and filled it with chocolate. so great! got in too late to blog, so i'm doing two days worth today.

Friday, October 22nd

Sweet Smell of Success
1957
Director: Alexander Mackendrick
Starring: Tony Curtis, Burt Lancaster
--------------

was really tired and fell asleep, regretably so, half way through the film. this was a special screening at the festival this year and i'm glad it was shown. it was started 20 minutes late which pretty much threw my day off.

it was late to the show i was going for at 2pm. so i missed hello lonesome. then i just waiting around for the next show which was at the same venue. luckily it was a venus that has couches in their lobby. saw kelly williams and apologize for missing an apoitment with him. i knew it would hurt me not showing up that meeting, but i could even get myself out of bed that day. this entire festival has made my mind on the dobie a lot. i really want it back, it's just sitting there all alone.

S&M Lawncare Austin Convention Center
2010
Director: Mark Potts
Starring: Mark Potts, Cole Selix
------------

I saw a film by this group of guys a few years ago at a festival and i remember it being so halarious. i'm sad to say that this seemed like a dumbed down version of their comedy. i dunno i wasn't digging it and kayla was falling asleep, so we left early. although i did like the corn dogs. i really just over the type of retard humor shown in this film. it seemed raw, flat jokes, and boobs, that was this. however, there was a really great ICQ joke. i mean, it wasn't completely un funny, but a little to low brow for me.

Sleep Study (played before S&M Lawncare)
this was starring two people i sort of knew where they were locally. john merrimen, a former employee of the austin film festival worked on it as well as kerri lindo. she did stand up at cap city when i worked there. if john merriman is going to act, i'm thinking he may want to de beard. his resemblance to zack galifanakis is a little too much. i like him though. he's always seemed very happy. the short was cute funny, a little over the top, but it was good, i hope this team keeps moving forward.

I Love You, Phillip Morris Regal Arbor
2009 (this has been pushed back forever and will finally be released in december)
Directors:Glenn Ficarra, John Requa
Starring: Jim Carrey, Ewan McGregor
--------------

this movie has been on my fucking gotta see list. i'm sort of biast being a jim carrey fan. however, playing a gay couple with ewan mccregor, holy crap, how can that be bad? it was everything i hoped for and more. it was more of a comedy than a drama, but had just the perfect amount. plus i think it's time we give jim some much deserved reconignition. i feel like no one takes the guy seriously. it seemed to me to be one of the more perfect romantic comedies and everyone should see it.
nothing more needs to be said.

The Last Lovecraft Alamo Lakecreek
2009
Director: Henry Saine
Starring: Kyle Davis, Devin McGinn
-----------

has a great shirt of a unicorn!! had really great production value for what they called a "low budget". great makeup work, good humor, and acting. the retard rapper from always sunny was in it. that was fun. it was very shawn on the dead meets harry potter, except it was about h.p. lovecraft and his mythos. there are more cheesy moments toward the meat of the film, but it is a sci-fi film, so there ya go. really loved the actor who played the captian, and the supporting actor was pretty sexy. it kept very good momentum. watch it on cable. like a a long version of an ANGEL episode.

Every Day Texas Spirit
2010
Director: Richard Levine
Starring: Helen Hunt, Liev Schriber, Eddie Izzard, Brian Denehey
--------------

yup, that's what it is alright. just a family dealing with life in the present is what this movie is about. nothing really happens of interest or surprise. just a great cast dealing with a gay son, and odd anxious son, a dying father, and an unsatisfied marital sex life. that's everyone, but i'll admit i fear taking care of my parents when they meet the point that they can longer take care of themselves. it's really odd how we don't think about those things until they happen. Helen Hunt is really tan in this film. leiv scrihber is really sexy and in a speedo in this movie. carla gucino is eye candy and used for gratuity, i'd like to see her spread her wings a little, i feel like she's been type cast a bit. nothing extrodenary, just people being people. i did find it quite ironic that the husband works as a shock writer for a drama television show and that is the main thing lacking in this film, but maybe that was intentional. p.s. eddie izzard is in it.

sexting (SHORT shown before Every Day)
this was a short written by Neil LaBute, whose other writing and plays i have enjoyed. it starred julia styles delivering a monolouge in black and white. it's decent dialouge, although i didn't really buy styles in the role, granted she did this in three hours, according to the director, so maybe it just needed more time, but eh, whatever. it was decent.

High School Austin Convention Center
2010
Director: John Stalberg
Starring: Adrian Brody, Michael Chicklis, Colin Hanks, Matt Bush, Sean Marquette
------------

colin hanks, who has a supporting role, was there to do a q&a after the screening. this film i actually found pretty funny, and i wasn't stoned for it!! a pot comedy that can stand on it's own for about 45 minutes, then the silliness ensues. it's bound to happen, it's a comedy about pot. adrian brody is magnificent as always as a gary oldman from true romance type drug dealer. a wonderfull cast of actors and i was really blown away by michael chicklis from the sheild. totally different than you see him normally, he gets a clap from me! really funny, a little superbad duo action thrown in there.

alright, trying to get to sleep soon, i've got a headache coming on ... kayla has passed out and we've got a documentary tomorrow.
