Austin Film Festival Day THREE

Sunday, October 24th

The Spirit Molecule
2010
Director: Mitch Schultz
Documentary Hosted by Joe Rogan
---------

there were tech problems in this screening and the lights were on for the first 10 minutes. crazy digital problems, i know all about that. it's all aff! at first the documentary was only explaining the science and mystery behind DMT and I was sort of impatient to find out information from users. i was also really sleepy. then they took a small offshoot into lsd history, but resumed with a research study that was conducted adn talked to many participants and even the nurse working the testing. it was pretty remarkable. it sounds like the most intense psychedelic trip ever known to man. anyone doing it swears it took them past this life and led them to a greater realization of self and the universe. or something like that.
well, sounds cool, i know i couldn't handle anything like that and i sort of fear for the idiot druggie kids who see this doc and go searching for a ride they can't escape. i think people should be pretty prepared for this as a drug. the only other thing i can say about this documentary is PICTURE PUZZLE PATTERNED DOOR!
not bad!

Welcome to the Rileys
2010
Director: Jake Scott(son of Ridley)
Starring: James Gandolfini, Kristen Stewart, Melissa Leo
----------

well this is the coming movie, where kstew tried to get rid of her wholesome twilight persona even more so then in the runaways. she plays a runaway in this as well. a 16 year old one, yeah, that's believeable, but i guess when you look like a desperate whore with herpes facial lesions, you look a little older. ha! so seeing tony soprano cry is odd, but he gets uber props for this role, he's not scary at all. a couple who has a dead daughter is reunited sort of by the involvement of a stripper prostitute, played by kstew. it's a big thing of replacement. i can see why kstew is trying with this, but really she's just a gross version of bella, i still have yet to see this girl stretch her acting bones. this film was alright overall, a little slow and i felt as if the only fucked up qualities it had were not played on enough. i was far more interested in the wife's story than the james and kstew story. this woman hadn't left her house, not even to get the mail in years due to her daughter dying. her strength over the course of the film i found much more compelling. melissa leo deserves some credit. it didn't feel as long as it was, so that's good. i'm still thinking it was too "meh" for me.

Meek's Cuttoff
2010
Director: Kelly Reichart
Starring: Michelle Williams, Paul Dano, Zoe Kasden, Shirley Henderson, Bruce Greenwood, and Will Patton
-------------

alright, so this had a good cast and i figure it's about the oregon trail and i like that game, so i'll go. then kelly williams introduced it. it was from the same director as wendy and lucy. i woldn't have gone at all if i would have known that. i really couldn't stand wendy and lucy, but if i had to watch another one at gunpoint, i would pick wendy over this film. good lord. yes, there is some beautiful imagrey, but honesely i could barely keep my eyes open. the film format was cool, most likey 1.35, sort of like old tv style of 35mm. can we keep paul dano out of old clothes? i would like to own some pioneer boots, they look pretty cool. i did however see michelle williams shoot a fun. who thought jen from dawson's creek would shoot a gun on screen one day. i didn't see that coming. meek is weak. bad actor, possible interesting written character. the indian was cool.i really wanted them to all die, but we don't even get closer. worst film of the fest so far that i sat all the way through.

Embargo
2010
Director: Tiago Sousa
Starring: Filipe Costa
------------

so i didn't take notes during this, for some reason. i didn't have a lot of room. stylistically it's being compared to the Coen brothers style and color grading. i saw a little of that. i really liked this movie's story. it related to how dependant we are on oil and gasoline. it relates to life and how we need to let go sometimes. it gets a little charlie kaufman up in here as well. over all pretty good, and a nice adorable bunny.

more tonight...
